Gigha Trip

TCC Cruise to Gigha leaving Campbeltown on Sunday 4 August

The intention is to leave Campbeltown on Sunday 4 August at 11:00 am assuming the weather is favourable.

There has been interest expressed both from members intending to take their boats and from members seeking crewing opportunities. Since it is getting close, I request those interested make a commitment. I ask members to contact me directly via email (I get a record then) with the following information:

1. Boat name and crew situation – do you have crew, do you need additional crew, do you have space and prepared to take additional crew?

2. Your plans after reaching Gigha.  When do you intend to return to Troon, when must you be back in Troon?

3. For those seeking crewing opportunities – when you need to be back in Troon. Preference for return via Crinan or the Mull.

Hopefully I will then be in a position to suggest linking those seeking crewing opportunities with boats.   If we can sort this earlier, it may give opportunity for earlier sailing trips so crews are familiar with boats and skippers.

All boats wishing to transit should contact the Sea Lock of Arrival see attached to book their transit.

Boats over 2.2 fresh water require a minimum of 48 hours’ notice.

Wacky Races report

Race Report: Wacky Races Summer 1: Race 2  (5/6/19)

Race 2 of the wacky races was an interesting affair with 4 boats competing on a fairly still evening. OOD Andy McRoberts selected the shortest possible course and although Seascape and Hunters Moon found a zephyr of wind to get off the line towards Lappock the slightly later starting boats struggled to cross the lines despite flying their spinnakers due to the mid flow ebb tide. (At one point due to the ebbing tide Green kestrel re-crossed the start line with kite still flying going astern!)

All persevered for around an hour but ultimately time was against completing the course in the 2 hour 10 minute time limit so the sensible decision to retire was made by all to allow some dry socialising ashore.

Race Report: Wacky Races Summer 1: Race 3 (12/6/19)

A lively forecast of 14-18 knots with gusts of up to 28 knots was hotly discussed in anticipation of racing on Wednesday night. Four boats competed with Connor McGaughey being responsible for OOD, ability assisted by Jim Hood. Given the forecast from a NE direct it was decided to keep the course inshore so start Lappock, Irvine Buoy and home all to port was the challenge.

Seascape jumped the line by 20 seconds so had a running start on the remainder of the fleet which started at 19:20 together. Stuart Powrie sporting his new sails for the season got the jump on the Penn Player and Storm of these starters although sailing solo Iain Gairns on Storm had an argument with his furler pre start making his job all the more challenging!

Storm made it to Lappock and subsequently Beecham’s Bouy first but unfortunately for reasons only known to Iain misread the course and headed to the finish line from here forfeiting his finish. A competitive beat with multiple lead changes occurred between Green Kestrel and Penn Player.

Picture one: Penn Player to port and beneath Green Kestrel …

Picture 2: Now above to windward. There were allegations that Andy was leaning in to run his engine off at this point but these turned out to be unfounded!

After a beam reach from Lappock to Irvine Buoy Green Kestrel showed no lack of downwind speed and finesse to hold her kite on an increasingly tight reach to the finish to clinch first by just over a minute from Penn Player on corrected time.

Unfortunately Seascape & crew found a hole in the wind around the size of a small continent and were stranded at Irvine Buoy for a considerable time. None the less due to Storm’s mistake they still earned a respectable 3rd for the evenings work.

Next race: Wednesday 19th June 2019.  OOD Bill Anderson.

Meet clubhouse 18:15 for course, update on any predicted harbour traffic and forecast/ tide.

Cruising News

Most of you will of heard about Ewan’s accidental fall while clearing his boat, which resulted in a fractured hip.  I am sure you will all wish him a speedy recovery.  I have been asked to take over as cruising convener in a temporary capacity. Since Ewan has already carried out most of the organisation for this year, I don’t expect there will be a great deal for me to do.

Arran Muster 22 & 23 June

We have four boats signed up so far for this muster next weekend.  It is pleasing that we have two non-boat owning members coming with us on this muster and I encourage more non-boat owning members to get into contact for future musters.

We will anchor off Holy Island, I invite all to join us on Noodle for evening meal (probably curry) and drinks.  Hopefully it will be reasonably calm and we will be able to raft up.

Will boat owners going please drop me an email to advise on numbers for catering – I hope I will be able to manage, but you may have to bring your own utensils.

Gigha Trip – Meeting TCC clubhouse Wed 26 June, 7pm

We advised a cruise in company to Gigha (incorporating a muster to Campbeltown) starting from Saturday 3 August earlier in the year so that you can arrange your diaries accordingly.

There has been a good response and it seems a number of boats will be going.  We have also received responses from members seeking crewing opportunities.

Gigha is a good setting off point for further points North and West and I expect some boats will then set off from there to Oban (say) and beyond.  It is also a good starting point for exploring southern part of the Inner Hebrides.  I assume some boats will want to return within one or two weeks

For those thinking of a shorter trip, we need to decide on the return to Troon, whether there is still a need to arrange to go in company or whether skippers are comfortable returning singly.

Return can be via the Crinan Canal or back around the Mull of Kintyre.  The Canal can be hard work and it seems they want vessels to pass through in convoy.  This can be inconvenient.

Purpose of the meeting is to seek preferences on return dates and passage.  If you cannot make the meeting will you please email me to advise:

1. Whether you intend to return on your own or not.
2. If you want to return in company, your preference for dates.
3. Crinan or Mull of Kintyre preference for return.

I will have charts pilot books and Admiralty tidal stream atlas available to discuss possible passages from Gigha.

Safety

I am looking forward to the Gas Safety talk on 25 July.  We all carry around a potential bomb on the form of a gas cylinder for cooking and I am sure there will be something we can all learn.

On the topic of safety, the other form of high energy we all carry is the 12 volt car battery.  These can deliver huge amounts of electrical energy in a short space of time – that is why they are used to start our engines.  The only cable connected to the battery positive without a fuse should be that connected to the starter.  Check the cable to your electrical panel is fused at or close to the battery.

Finally, any non-boat owning member seeking to build up their experience with short trips in the Clyde, please contact me and we will arrange something.

Please send all replies and responses directly to my email address below.
